Glow is a BBC’s JavaScript library, which aims to get working with the JavaScript and the DOM easier. It succeed by hiding cross-browser issues, abstracting common tasks and providing a series of user interface widgets. Glow is available under the Apache Licence, Version 2.0. This allows you to use the library in almost all circumstances, and to change it. The library is extremely well-documented & it already comes with various ready-to-use widgets like: auto suggest, carousel, overlay (light box), slider, timetable & more. These widgets are already there in most of the famous Javscript libraries like Jquery, UI etc. and have strong knowledge hub, community support.

Glow is not the BBC’s first, JavaScript library though it is the first to be released as open-source software. Previous libraries built by BBC offered fairly basic features compared to the range of modern libraries available today. Some of them were built to support Internet Explorer-3 and Netscape Navigator-3, indicating their origin. In 2007 BBC started looking at possible replacements for their ageing JavaScript libraries. There are a variety of excellent, open source JavaScript libraries available, the most common being jQuery.

Though the codes seem more like JQuery or other Javascript libraries, what makes it distinct from others is the open-source component. The best point about Open Source is that Testing, Bug fixing and even Bug Reporting is done by the community and, for the community and the community contributes it to give a rich experience with the projects that release. It’s more like a community based projects, rather being a single responsibility of a single organization. Glow is another step in the Open source community by an excellent player in the market, which signs that Open Source is no longer the range of Geeks, but is also getting popular among End users. With the release of Google’s Operating System Chrome, the world will accept other crucial steps towards free domain, called Open Source.

Overall, glow is a JavaScript library which gives you Simplified DOM manipulation, animations, event handling etc. It also provides A versatile set of user interface widgets and Clear and complete documentation. BBC Glow is licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0. Just check out the demos of what it can make or read the documentation or simply download the source code for use. It will emerge as a serious contender for the existing and established Javascript frameworks.
