Seashore: An Open Source Image Editing Software for Mac OS X
Are you bored of Adobe? Are you looking for a better alternative? We suggest you take a look at Seashore, an open source image editing software for Mac OS X. Based on GIMP’s technology, the interface is much more user friendly and best suited for the Mac users. If you are looking for a software for quick and simple image editing, then this software should be what you need.
Getting Started!
Seashore is easier to install than most of other MAC softwares. You need to download it from their website by paying nothing. When it is done downloading, just unpack the file and your Seashore is ready to use!
First Look!
Seashore is a very simple image editor, and the design is also simple; similar to Pixen. There are toolbars for separate functions and allows for layered working which will take care of basic image editing needs. Unless you have used GIMP, it won’t be easy to use Seashore. On the other hand, it will be easy for Adobe users to make the transition. If you still have troubles, there is an excellent documentation which will get you equipped to handle Seashore.
Effects!
This software is a quickie image editor. It is not packed with features only the essential, ideal for hobbyists. For functions like Cropping this image editor is good. But again designed for a beginner the number of steps involved are more; a systematic approach. So if you want to Crop an image, you have to select the crop tool from the toolbar window, drag the selection you want in the canvas window, and then press the Crop button found in the options tab of the Options window. This will be irritating for nubile users.
In terms of the actual options and features it has, Seashore packs a decent punch. It has all the traditional tools of image editors, and has a good layer implementation which works very well with alpha channels and has all of the usual blend modes. There are only handful and useful effects and filters when compared to Photoshop but should do the job.
Verdict!
Seashore is a good software. Even though, not preferred by nubile users it is buzz for the uninitiated users. It is MAC native application with a very small footprint and has a complete package of tools, features and options comparable to Photoshop. This software is still nascent, and has a great potential for improvement in coming years. Why don’t you try it?
